1814年11月6日，出身乐器制造世家的阿道夫·萨克斯在今天的比利时出生。正是拥有奇思妙想的他，后来嫌当时的乐器不够“带劲”，把低音单簧管的吹嘴和铜管的圆锥管身硬拼在一起，结果拼出了萨克斯管。1846年拿下专利，从军乐队一路吹进爵士酒吧。

1966年，他和同事提出用玻璃纤维传输光信号，被同行嘲笑"世界上不存在没有杂质的玻璃"。但4年后，美国康宁公司就造出了足够纯净的光纤，理论被验证；1981年，第一个光纤传输系统问世。一个被嘲笑的设想，成了数字经济的路基。2009年，高锟因此获得诺贝尔物理学奖。
