Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

MARK RONSON
Q: Was there ever a conflict in the DJ scene at the time between taste versus technique, or curator versus performer? How did those two schools fit together?
You had DJs like Stretch Armstrong, who had serious skills, but in the club, he played pretty minimally. DJs like Funkmaster Flex were exciting on the mic and elevated the party, while AM found a way to combine performance with technical skill, bringing something unique to the scene.
MARK RONSON
Q: What was it about nightlife in New York City at that time that made you want to be a DJ?
It was the music at first that made me want to be a DJ for sure, because I played in a bunch of high school bands.
IONE SKYE
Q: Talk to me about the process of how you go about writing a book like this.
It was all about emotional memory and building scenes around them, using both strong memories and research to recall details.
KAI LENNY
Q: What parallels do you see between the way the social media reacted to the Lahaina fires and what happened in Los Angeles recently?
Lenny notes that there's always heightened initial interest in social media for tragedies like these, but as time passes, support often wanes. He emphasizes the importance of continued accountability and support for affected communities.
KAI LENNY
Q: Has starting a family and getting married impacted your approach to riding waves of consequence?
Yes, Lenny feels that having a family has led him to train harder and be more calculated in his approach to big wave surfing, as he wants to be an example for his kids and remain safe while pursuing his passion.
