easily my favorite book podcast—wins by miles by choosing books of all kinds and times (not just what’s coming out); doing excellent critical work in describing the style and approach of the writing, not just the plot; reading nice little excerpts so you can actually hear what a book sounds like; and being very very funny.

  • Doesnt review his friends’ books apart from his friends

Nice to hear him a-laughing and a-lolling with Sheena Patel, who he knows really really really well and goes drinking with but not a friend, no way. Nice that she blurbed his book too. I got the measure of this. Cool.

E21: Joel Answers Your Questions
Q: Where do you stand on reading books on phones, et cetera?
For me, the great joy of reading is not having to look at a screen. I can't do it, but Godspeed to anyone who can.
E21: Joel Answers Your Questions
Q: Have you ever started reading a book and not finished? If so, which ones?
Yeah, I mean, the last one was called Sarah by JT. LaRoy. It's just garbage. I've tried to read The Brief and Frightening Reign of Phil three different times and every time I can't get through it.
E21: Joel Answers Your Questions
Q: How do you write: laptop or pen or pencil or stylus on a tablet?
I'm just a good old-fashioned laptop man. When I get going, I type quickly and I think quickly, capturing as much of the magic as possible.
