神經內分泌腫瘤生長緩慢，依據臨床症狀表現，區分為功能性及非功能性兩種，其中功能性腫瘤會導致諸多症狀，如反覆胃潰瘍、慢性腹瀉、盜汗等，患者平均花5-7年才得以確診。

蘋果之父賈伯斯因胰臟癌而離世，但其實他罹患的並非一般的胰臟癌，而是胰臟神經內分泌腫瘤。神經內分泌腫瘤是一種因荷爾蒙異常分泌而等致的腫瘤，台灣每年估計新增約1400位病患，這種癌症會發生在許多器官，而其中80%發生在胰臟及胃腸道。
