  • An enjoyable (and critical) examination of Jane, her world and her work. A good starting point for any young scholar (or old admirer like me) of her work and life. More like this, please!

  • Interesting content

But the background yelling in episode 2 is incredibly irritating. Seems that this level of podcast should understand where and how to record.

Q&A: experts answer your Jane Austen questions
Q: Would Jane Austen have considered herself a feminist?
Emma explains that while the term 'feminist' was not recognized in Austen's time, themes of women's economic dependence are evident in her novels.
Q&A: experts answer your Jane Austen questions
Q: How much did Jane Austen know about science? Do we know which scientific books of the time she might have read?
John admits he is quite ignorant about this, suggesting Austen's knowledge likely came from her father's collection of popular science books, but beyond that, evidence of her scientific knowledge is scant.
Q&A: experts answer your Jane Austen questions
Q: Sarah writes, I'm curious to know what we know about Jane Austen and faith, and also Jane Austen and religion. How did Austen's personal faith influence her?
Lizzie responds that Austen's views on faith are hard to clarify as she rarely discusses it directly, but she presents church institutions with critique and appreciation in her novels.
The writer
Q: Did that kind of aspect, that anonymity, give her a degree of creative freedom in how she was writing?
It provided some creative freedom, allowing her to navigate her lower gentry status without the societal pressures of fame, but also limited her recognition as an author.
The writer
Q: What was the risk of putting your name to a novel in Austen's day?
The risk was significant due to the low reputation of novels, which were seen as a distraction from a woman's responsibilities, exposing women to ridicule and criticism for writing, yet also providing an outlet for their views.
