Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Unlocking Learning Strategies and Decision-Making
Q: Do you think companies should more formally structure learning and skill development?
Yes, companies should allow individuals to have autonomy in deciding what skills to learn while being mindful of the risks of not providing guidance, as this can lead to ineffective decision-making about their growth.
Unlocking Learning Strategies and Decision-Making
Q: What are the aspects of studying that you believe are important to take into your career or adulthood?
Learning in the workplace is different as there is often no structured coursework, and while the principles of memory don’t change, the application of learning strategies does. Workers should be proactive in setting aside time for learning and improving thinking skills.
Unlocking Learning Strategies and Decision-Making
Q: Why did you decide to write your book, 'Outsmart Your Brain,' and how is it different from your previous works?
This book is aimed at students as I discovered that many of my own students lacked effective study strategies. It differs from my previous works which were more directed towards teachers and adults.
Unlocking Learning Strategies and Decision-Making
Q: What got you started in this line of work and in this line of research?
I was at the intersection of experimental psychology and neuroscience, working on technical problems, but my career shifted after I gave a talk to teachers and realized they didn't know basic concepts about learning. This realization drove me to help learners directly and write books for them.
How To Become More Attractive INTELLECTUALLY
Q: What first intellectually attracted you to me?
I was attracted to you because you were driven, getting good grades, and you showed a hunger for knowledge.
