  • IBS is the worst.

As a newly diagnosed IBS sufferer that went from fit and healthy dad of two to practically bedridden in the space of a few months, listening to some of these older episodes is actually giving me hope that I’m not destined to spend the rest of my life in agony. Would love to hear more from the functional gut clinic guys on IBS in particular and strategies to combat it

Ps not sure why Apple are showing this as 3 star when I gave it 5!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

The Importance of the Reproductive Tract Microbiome: Insights from David MacIntyre
Q: How might future screening tools change prenatal care?
Non-invasive microbiome profiling combined with host response markers could allow early risk stratification for adverse outcomes, enabling closer surveillance and targeted therapies preconception or early in pregnancy.
The Importance of the Reproductive Tract Microbiome: Insights from David MacIntyre
Q: What is the potential of vaginal probiotics like Lactin V in preventing preterm birth?
Vaginal delivery of specific strains shows promising engraftment and safety with signals of reduced preterm birth rates, leading to a planned phase II randomized trial to robustly test efficacy in multiple UK sites.
The Importance of the Reproductive Tract Microbiome: Insights from David MacIntyre
Q: Why is Lactobacillus crispatus considered a key player across populations?
Lactobacillus crispatus is consistently associated with healthy states and optimal outcomes, though its prevalence varies by population; it tends to maintain a low-diversity, acidic environment that suppresses pathogens and dampens inflammation.
The Importance of the Reproductive Tract Microbiome: Insights from David MacIntyre
Q: What triggered the realization that the reproductive tract microbiome is important?
The realization grew from observations in premature birth research, where pathogens in the lower reproductive tract and shifts in microbial communities correlated with adverse outcomes, supported by later molecular methods that highlighted the unique, low-diversity Lactobacillus-dominated niche.
Fatty Liver, Gut Health, and Functional Medicine - Dr Guy Neff
Q: What is your approach to engaging patients in clinical trials, and how do you address concerns about trial participation and life insurance?
The approach involves a thorough, empathetic education process, two-hour to multi-hour conversations, and clear alignment with the trial goals; patients must understand the risks and benefits, and sponsors rely on sites that screen effectively while building trust to reduce dropout and ensure appropriate candidate selection.
