  • the international aid business

While there are some good people involved helping people who need help, one cannot deny that the IOs bring a large income to Geneva, especially for international conferences and meetings of governing bodies. There are times when Geneva hotels are booked solid and it’s hard to get a hotel. It is a large, unwieldy and self-perpetuating system and mandates are not always clear from the governing bodies and donors.

  • Decent when on topic

This is a good show when the convo is something that can’t be found elsewhere. I.e. Interviews with IO leadership, those in the field with the Red Cross, etc.

It is quite poor when the show is trying to offer higher level analysis on Trump policy or the future of multilateralism. Rarely feels objective or insightful.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Who controls landmines and drones?
Q: Do you see that clearing mines will simply be followed by new technologies replacing old ones, like drones posing similar ethical problems?
Yes, the panelists argue that as long as new weapon systems exist, there will be a need to adapt treaties and training, especially given drone proliferation and AI-informed targeting which current conventions inadequately address.
Who controls landmines and drones?
Q: Okay. So you said that unilateral disarmament is a strategy you don't really subscribe to. But on a practical level, would landmines actually help your security?
Military experts in Estonia currently see no utility for landmines in defense as of now, but acknowledge that policy could change; the broader point is that other tools and deterrence strategies are preferred, while remaining vigilant about potential shifts in threat perception.
Inside Geneva: women in peace
Q: How do we define peace, and is it more than simply the absence of violence?
Peace is defined as a broader, inclusive process that encompasses not only reducing violence but also establishing governance, dignity, and legitimate institutions that people can trust, with a clear emphasis on meaningful participation by women and civil society.
Peace talks but the war grinds on
Q: What are you hoping for, for 2026?
Hoping for peace and an end to the unjustified suffering in Ukraine.
Peace talks but the war grinds on
Q: How are the people you work with going to be able to do that?
Many will be able to celebrate with family, but they will also be separated from loved ones who have been displaced or are refugees.
