  • Splendid podcast.

Excellent podcast. Even though I'm a old and more of a artist, I found this interesting, educational and clear. My only wish is that it was on youtube because of subtitles. I'm partially deaf so need sometime. Great work. I am now a subscriber.

85: Reel Friends: Building Social Discovery that Scales to Billions
Q: How did you approach performance and device diversity at Meta scale?
We focused on asynchronously fetching metadata, prefetching to hide latency, and selectively enabling animations only on capable devices, while pausing animations during scrolling or on lower-end devices to maintain smoothness and avoid crashes.
85: Reel Friends: Building Social Discovery that Scales to Billions
Q: What was the origin story for Friend Bubbles and how did you decide to bring it to Facebook?
Instagram had already launched a version of Friend Bubbles, which inspired Facebook to introduce a socially grounded discovery layer. The idea was to couple social proof with video content to keep users connected and engaged without overwhelming them with content.
84: Trust But Canary: Configuration Safety at Scale
Q: How do Canary and Progressive Rollouts work in practice at Meta?
Canary tests run on a small subset for a short window, then scale to an entire region, with production rollout only after safety checks; progressive rollout spreads changes over a longer period to allow for safer deployment across services.
84: Trust But Canary: Configuration Safety at Scale
Q: What do configurations mean in the context of distributed systems, and why are they powerful yet risky?
Configs are settings that control how a service behaves, enabling rapid iteration and feature experimentation without code changes, but they can propagate quickly across the fleet and cause widespread issues if misconfigured.
84: Trust But Canary: Configuration Safety at Scale
Q: Ishwari, can you kick things off with your journey at Meta and what you did before joining?
Ishwari explains their nine years at Meta, starting with infrastructure management for monetization and evolving toward release, reliability, and especially configuration change.
