Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Episode 377: Pecos and Promise
Q: What changes would help Pecos League be viewed as a serious entity that deserves attention?
Improving organizational consistency at the city and league level, stabilizing housing and venue infrastructure, and presenting a unified, professional image are essential. Investing in governance, clearer career paths for managers, and reliable media/recap platforms can help shift perception from a niche indie circuit to a credible, growth-oriented league.
Episode 377: Pecos and Promise
Q: What are the biggest challenges for running a Pecos League team?
Key challenges include housing for visiting teams, stable sponsorship, travel logistics, roster management, and maintaining consistent operations across dispersed markets. Financial constraints drive a need for disciplined budgeting, smart recruitment, and dependable local partnerships to keep the product attractive and sustainable.
Episode 357: Trying or Crying Camp
Q: What is the league's approach to expansion and markets like Montreal or Canadian markets?
Expansion is guided by identifying suitable ownership and operating partners, balancing existing and new markets, and considering infrastructure and regulatory factors beyond the league's immediate control to maintain stability for current teams while pursuing growth.
Episode 357: Trying or Crying Camp
Q: How does the league view data and MLB's use of centralizing data and analytics?
The guests note that data needs translation into digestible visuals for teams and emphasize that MLB's broader data strategy is still being clarified, with TrackMan-style data requiring translation for practical use by teams and scouts.
Episode 357: Trying or Crying Camp
Q: What does day one of the tryout camp entail and who is evaluating the players?
Day one involves closed-environment drills with fielding, hitting, and general evaluation by coaches and scouts, using a standardized approach with TrackMan data to ensure uniform measurement across players.
