  • Essential for newbies

This January, at 47, I decided to try acting. That same week I auditioned for a part in a local play and I ended up getting cast! Since then, I have been listening and re-listening to this incredible podcast. For anyone new to the craft of acting, this should be required listening and I’ve been hanging on every helpful and honest word. All the episodes are amazing but the episode with Matthew Macfadyen is sensational and I just listened to it again for the 5th time prior to a big rehearsal. Ful... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Jessica Henwick
Q: What has consistently driven you to say yes to projects over the years?
I have to be behind the script as a whole; it's rarely about my character alone. I look for projects where I can support the art, and I also assess whether the people making it are people I want to work with, because that dynamic shapes the entire experience.
Chase Infiniti
Q: What was harder to learn, on-set work or public-facing aspects like interviews and promotions?
On-set work felt more comfortable because it played to my strengths, but the big learning curve was the shift to promoting a film or TV show and managing press tours, which required a different kind of focus and preparation.
Chase Infiniti
Q: What is chemistry to you?
Chemistry is about showing up as yourself and bringing your heart and love for the craft to a chemistry read, which allows energy to flow and makes the interaction with co-actors feel natural.
Matthew Rhys
Q: What is the logistics of filming a 10-page scene with Claire Danes?
Rhys describes meticulous prep, two days of shooting, multiple camera angles, and a grounded, real-world approach directed by Antonio Campos to keep the moment authentic.
Matthew Rhys
Q: Is there a nugget from your formal training that still helps you today?
Rhys emphasizes the enduring value of doing the work, reading scripts deeply, and maintaining flexibility beyond rigid prep, highlighting Hopkins' approach of extensive script study.
