  • Furniture is not a four letter word

I loved listening to Dianne and Doug interact. I think Furgatory is one of the best words ever created! We need to put that on a t-shirt 🔥

I look forward to hearing LOTS more conversations about decommissioning furniture. It’s a massive global issue and is going to take everyone working together to try and solve the problem.

Thank you for talking about designing your life. It’s something I am also super passionate about. Design your life; you only have one.

  • Furniture is not a four letter word

Dianne Kimiko Murata of Kimiko Designs is spot on with the complexities to a job going all the way from when we are brought on to a project to it being installed right when the puzzle is complete.

Furniture doesn’t have to be a four letter word and Dianne gives great insight into this all the way from programming thru to post documents. I love the new word made up about the gap that sometimes happens between the design firm and the dealer, Furgatory!!! She touches very well on sustainability an... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Design for the mind
Q: If a company or a school or hospital want to start designing more inclusively, but they don't know where to begin, what's one practical step that you'd recommend?
Kati stresses the importance of consulting with individuals with lived experience to better understand their needs instead of assuming what they require from the design.
Design for the mind
Q: When I think about that, what comes to my mind are things that are very bold. When it comes to your mind, when you hear the word designing with awe, how, what do you think of that as it relates to neuro-inclusive design?
Kati elaborates that designing with awe in neuro-inclusive design relates to quieter details that make neurodivergent individuals feel seen and represented, leading to a sense of relief.
Design for the mind
Q: So you had a great little tool there. I mean, you were talking while you were there, you shared a little bit, kind of like a toolkit, correct?
Kati explains the mini audit activity that helps designers evaluate their spaces in terms of neuro-inclusivity by considering tactile, auditory, and visual elements.
Design for the mind
Q: Can you tell us at a high level, how does, what's that interaction like with you and the designers and architects at DLR?
Roby describes the collaboration with designers at DLR Group as highly integrated, emphasizing the importance of research and feedback in the design process.
Brain, body, and the built environment
Q: What lasting influence do you believe design can have on mental well-being?
Design can create calming environments that reduce stress responses, promoting health and healing for all individuals, especially those who are neurodivergent.
