    I fought my curls for most of my youth and young adult life…..venturing into downtown Chicago salons from my suburban home to undergo chemical straightening with products that looked like peanut butter and left scabs on my scalp, I rolled the top portion of my hair on large soup cans and then wrapped the rest around with huge bobby pins to sleep and cried after getting haircuts from stylists who looked at me with pity.
