I’m a drummer. I love music- all kinds. I listen to (and watch on YouTube and the like) a lot of interviews with musicians, and podcasts about musicians and music. Which I believe clearly establishes me as an expert. This is the best one. Dave interviews people in a real, no frills, very open, very organic, very human way. And it’s always fascinating. He’s a person people like talking to. You can tell immediately. He also doesn’t ask ridiculous, pandering questions. He’s not an industry plant. H... more

Aaron Sterling
Q: What advice would you give aspiring session drummers about navigating the industry?
Say yes to opportunities while you're building your reputation, but also be honest about your limits and family life. Never compromise your core craft for a quick gig. Build relationships with engineers and artists who value sound and collaboration, and always be ready to learn from each situation, because the right mix of timing, networking, and skill can unlock extraordinary chances.
Aaron Sterling
Q: What's your philosophy about gear and live sound versus studio sound?
The important thing is achieving a sound that will translate when heard through speakers, not just how it feels in the room. I adjust the kit and tuning to suit different venues and rely on sound engineers who can make the mix sing. I'm not married to one approach; I'll adapt to the environment as long as the hammered-out goal is a compelling, cohesive sound.
Aaron Sterling
Q: How did you first get into the kind of work you do now and end up on tour with John Mayer?
I started as a studio drummer in Nashville, learning from senior players and watching how great sounds translate to the mix. A key break was being recommended by other musicians and then proving myself in studio settings and on a few live calls. Eventually, the opportunity with John Mayer came as he sought a specific sound, and my experience in the studio helped me blend in with his live band in a way that felt right.
James Gadson
Q: I'm in Los Angeles with James Gadson. James, thank you very much for having me over today.
The host sets up the interview and introduces the setting, and Gadson responds with a warm acknowledgment and begins sharing his current activities and perspective.
Steve Lukather
Q: Did you ever have to audition for him?
No formal audition, but Jeff had seen him play throughout high school and recognized his talent.
