  • Next level!

I generally enjoy this podcast, but the interview with Nate Morton (who’s work I barely know) is hands down, one off the most interesting and revealing conversations between two full time working musicians you will hear. As a part time musician (ok, drummer 🤪), I found this fascinating and a reality check. Also, a good distraction when you’re in hospital, post op, and your knee is giving you hell.

  • Terrific podcast! Keep them coming!

The episodes are always inspiring and informative and I eagerly await new ones for my Thursday drive to my gig. I appreciate the variety and some guests’ point of view and stories resonate more than others with me, but I learn and take away something from each and every episode, and I encourage drummers to go back and listen to past episodes. Lots of golden nuggets to grow and get better with here folks! Well done Matt, Zack and Mike!

  • Love it!

This podcast consistently knocks it out. Always learning something from the conversations, I really appreciate how the hosts are prepared and have insightful questions. It’s genuine and gives a perspective of what it’s really like to work as a drummer, build a career and even the tradeoffs folks make in their careers.

    Thank you!!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

571 - Craig Krolicki: Drum Teching, Being the Glue Between Drummer and Engineer, Drumming in Nashville
Q: What are you doing to stay connected with the kit and playing at the level you want while touring and teching?
He keeps a regular practice routine on a pad and brief, targeted kit time when possible, plus a plan to dedicate more time to full kit practice when schedules allow. He emphasizes maintaining health and energy, and leveraging practice to stay sharp between gigs.
564 - Ryan Connors: MD'ing for Hozier, Finding Self-Acceptance as a Drummer, Loving the Rehearsal Process
Q: What drew you to MD work for a major artist like Hozier, and how has your multi-instrumental background informed that role?
Connors describes moving to Nashville, gaining experience across jazz, classical percussion, and piano, and how this broad musical curiosity helped him communicate with drummers and other performers. The MD role evolved from being the keyboard player who could keep a steady, adaptable presence to coordinating the whole live show, balancing leadership with collaboration.
560 - Bruno Esrubilsky: Playing with Mitzki, Supporting the Artist (not just the song), Letting His Brazilian Shine Through
Q: What are some of the needs Mitski has from you as her drummer?
Bruno explains that the needs evolve as Mitski's artistry evolves: starting with a drums-forward, rock/punk approach and then shifting to accommodate the space created by adding a dedicated bassist, chairs, and stage theatrics; the goal is to support the artist and the show, shaping his playing to fit her movements and cues.
557 - Chris Stankee: SABIAN’s Director of Artist & Public Relations, Sabian Lore, Memories of Neil Peart

The internship and early mentorship exposed him to manufacturing, design, and a holistic view of how musicians interact with gear, which informed his approach to artist relations and product development at Sabian.
555 - Zoltan Tobak: Recording and Touring for Muscadine Bloodline, Gigs That Advance Your Career, California to Nashville
Q: How did the Muscadine Bloodline gig come about?
