So glad to have discovered Iain. His concepts and good natured approach to martial arts are informative as well as entertaining.
This podcast is great for history and the curiosities of traditional karate, but as my son and I listened, he remarked “Wow, I wish we did all that!”. This is not the karate you’re gonna find around you and feels like a bit of a bait and switch, not that it’s his fault.
I found this podcast to be incredibly insightful and thought provoking. I don’t agree with everything that Iain says, but his words make you rightfully question the assumptions underlying many martial arts classes. As a 30+ year practitioner of traditional Shotokan, I have seen both practical and impractical karate taught. Iain reminds me the importance of our students understanding the context of our instruction at each step.
Iain's stuff will open the eyes of 3K karate practitioners ( it certainly did mine!) and change the way you think about Kata and self protection. more
Iain’s podcast is based primarily around well argued monologues or essays. It’s not often an interview podcast. When he has done interviews the sound has been wonky. more
