20 Years in Family Business from the Kalos Founders

Training Refrigeration: Building Technicians Who Think, Not Just Fix - Short #283
Q: Any tips for new technicians coming up into the game?
Billy advises learning the components first, then the refrigeration cycle, and stresses the importance of practical, hands-on training, mentorship, and starting with fundamentals before moving to complex CO2 systems.
Troubleshooting Tips and Tricks w/ Let's Be Techs
Q: How do you handle intermittent faults without blowing fuses?
Use a short finder approach by substituting a controllable load (like a small relay or contactor) in place of a fuse to observe behavior safely, and progressively isolate the circuit to identify the faulty component without excessive downtime.
Troubleshooting Tips and Tricks w/ Let's Be Techs
Q: What are some of the first things you automatically check when you approach a unit with a suspected fault?
Start with the basics: ensure fans run, check thermostat displays, listen for refrigerant flow, and verify no ice on the unit; then listen for suction line behavior and look for obvious signs like oil leaks or burned wires before moving to more invasive checks.
