フランスを代表するドビュッシーとラヴェルという2人の作曲家が、人生の最後にヴァイオリン・ソナタを書いたのは不思議な偶然でしょうか。
ドビュッシーは、この曲で調性にかなりこだわっており、ト短調（g-moll） を使用しています。これは、ドビュッシーの弦楽四重奏曲もト短調であることから、弦楽器の調弦との関係で、楽器の性能を活かしやすい調性であるためと考えられます。

この作品は、ソナタという形式をとっていますが、各楽章が8分、5分、3分と次第に短くなる独特な構造をしています。
また、長らく存在が噂されていたヴァイオリン・ソナタ第一番ですが、生誕100年記念の際、その幻の第一番が発見され、第1楽章がようやく出版されました。この楽章を聞くとラヴェルの師であったフォーレの作風に酷似していて、それが故かラヴェルが作曲を中断または破棄したのかもしれません。

フランスの曲はあまり馴染みがないのですが聞いていて美しい曲が多く気持ちがいいです。ドビュッシーの亡き王女のパバーヌは所属しているアマオケで弾いたのですが、私には小節を超えた音符が多く難しかったです。
でもそれを克服し、そこから出てくる音は本当に美しい。
