Breaking the Swiss 100km Record @ 3:47/km Pace | Pascal Rüeger, Professional Ultra-Runner
Q: What advice would you give to someone aiming for their first 100k ultramarathon?
Just do it and avoid over-pushing early; run a six-hour loop to learn pacing and enjoyment, not pressure, and keep in mind that consistency, not a single stellar workout, builds capability for long distances.
Breaking the Swiss 100km Record @ 3:47/km Pace | Pascal Rüeger, Professional Ultra-Runner
Q: Can you walk us through your race-day fueling logistics?
I carried a few gels on my belt, received gels and drinks at support tables during loops, used a hydration strategy that limited unnecessary drinking to avoid time wasted stopping, and relied on a system of a gel every few kilometers with a water intake just to cool down or moisten the mouth.
Breaking the Swiss 100km Record @ 3:47/km Pace | Pascal Rüeger, Professional Ultra-Runner
Q: How did you define and maintain your heart-rate zones and fueling plan for such a long race?
I had pre-tested zones years earlier and kept to them, adjusting only for conditions like temperature. I planned to stay in Zone 2 around 158–162 bpm (160 average in cooler conditions) and used gels and drinks to hit around 80–100 g of carbs per hour, supplemented by fluids to stay hydrated without causing delays.
Breaking the Swiss 100km Record @ 3:47/km Pace | Pascal Rüeger, Professional Ultra-Runner
Q: What was the plan going into the Swiss 100k race, and what time were you aiming for?
I aimed to start fast enough to take the lead but without overdoing it, relying on Zone 2 fueling and a pacing strategy around 3:40 per kilometer initially, with a plan to hold 3:40–3:50 depending on wind and conditions, and to break the record if conditions stayed favorable.
The Power of Cross Training & Strength Training for Endurance Athletes | Expert Series 16 | Peter Glassford & Molly Hurford - Kinesiologist, Endurance Coach, Writer & Hosts of the Consummate Athlete
Q: Could you share some examples of how you coach corporate athletes who travel weekly or have demanding jobs?
Coaching corporate athletes often means breaking the assumption that every workout must be a long ride or a gym session. We build travel-friendly plans with hotel gym workouts, uphill treadmill sessions, and short, efficient circuit routines. The goal is to maintain consistency and allow for blocks of training when home, ensuring they return with continued progress rather than starting from scratch.
