今回ご紹介するのは、チャンナというお坊さんのお話です。
チャンナは、お釈迦さまが出家するとき、そのお手伝いをした人物でした。
そのため、「自分は誰よりもお釈迦さまに近い」という思いを強く持っていました。
しかし、その思いは次第に高慢さへと変わり、仲間の悪口を言ったり、注意されても自分の非を認めなかったりするようになります。
そんなチャンナに対して、お釈迦さまが残した最後の対応は、
「誰もチャンナに話しかけてはいけない」
というものでした。

今回は、仏弟子・阿那律（あなりつ）尊者と、お釈迦さまにまつわる物語です。
阿那律尊者は、お釈迦さまの説法の場で居眠りをしたことを深く恥じ、「二度と眠らない」と誓って厳しい修行を続け、その結果、視力を失ってしまいます。
そんなある日、阿那律は自分の衣のほころびを縫おうとしますが、目が見えないため、針に糸を通すことができません。
そこで「誰か、私のために針に糸を通して、功徳を積もうとする人はいませんか」と声をかけます。

今回のお話は、お釈迦さまの説法を聞きながら居眠りをしてしまった仏弟子・阿那律尊者のお話です。
阿那律尊者は、自分の居眠りを深く恥じ、「もう二度と眠らない」と誓います。
しかし、その決意はやがて彼自身の身体を追い詰めていくことになります。
そんな阿那律尊者に、お釈迦さまが伝えたのは、
「修行を怠るのもよくない。しかし、酷使しすぎるのもよくない」
