Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Sickle Cell Disease: New Wave of Gene Therapies
Q: With how the FDA approval of Cascabie is still in its infancy, we were wondering, how many patients do you see take the treatment?
We don't treat anyone with Cascabie. Currently, only a few patients are being treated due to the complexities and costs involved in the procedure.
Sickle Cell Disease: New Wave of Gene Therapies
Q: Do you think we'll ever get to the stage where gene therapy eventually replaces treatments like bone transplant or other molecules?
I think we might, but not with the current forms of gene therapy. The technology is still in its infancy and faces significant challenges before it can effectively compete with the established success of bone marrow transplants.
Sickle Cell Disease: New Wave of Gene Therapies
Q: To start talking about sickle cell disease specifically, could you talk more about the common treatments for sickle cell disease and at least from a clinical perspective, how have you seen various sickle cell treatments improve patient quality of life?
Sickle cell has been frustrating for many years, but the only really effective drug for this disorder is hydroxyurea. While it doesn't cure anyone, it significantly decreases the number of pain crises, improving quality of life for many patients.
