  • The only podcast I can listen to in the car with my wife

My wife actually finds the banter to be terribly entertaining and I find that *many/most* of their answers to issues that homebrewers actually face in the regular to be well-researched or at least a viewpoint that I can look up myself and verify that it’s wrong if it sounds hinky.

Josh is a genuinely entertaining host, and I deeply respect the knowledge that Todd and James bring to the table concerning both good basic practices and a strong traditional perspective on German beer styles and on w... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Fixing Foamy Beer, Frozen Fruit Tips, & Easy Hop Subs | Episode 475
Q: How should Jim approach blueberry beer for a competition given different blueberry forms (extract, puree, frozen, concentrate)?
The guest suggests understanding how fruit fermentables behave; real fruit loses some blueberry character as sugars ferment, so consider using a mix of real fruit with non-fermentable sugars or lactose to maintain body and blueberry perception. For puree lacking FDA standard, explore safer alternatives like crystallized blueberry or fruit in a fermentable bag to manage solids and avoid clogging, and run bench trials to dial sweetness and carbonation.
3 Topics for Brewing Better Beer: Dry Hopping, Used Gear Tips, & Medaling at Competitions – Ep. 473
Q: I'm looking for your best practices on dry hopping, specifically regarding timing. Should I drop hops during high krausen or wait until fermentation finishes?
Dry hopping timing matters, but the consensus here is to avoid overthinking: many brewers dry hop around day five to seven to balance aroma with minimal oxygen exposure, and using bags or dedicated keg adapters helps minimize clogging and oxidation.
The Art of the Craft: Life, Lyrics, and Lager with Joe Whiting – Ep. 471
Q: When did Joe first get into brewing and what kept him in the hobby over the years?
He started in the late 1970s and stayed because of the hands-on creativity, community, and the mix of music and craft that the hobby offered, even when touring or life got busy.
The Challenges of Operating a Homebrew Supply Shop in 2026 – Ep. 472
Q: What makes your customer service stand out?
I directly text customers to confirm orders and preferences, answer questions quickly, and often provide personalized assistance, treating every interaction as a potential lifelong customer relationship.
The Challenges of Operating a Homebrew Supply Shop in 2026 – Ep. 472
Q: How did you approach the online retail side of the business?
I initially launched with a simple landing page, then integrated Shopify to enable online sales, learning as I went and pivoting back to online retail in 2026 after a rocky start, focusing on low costs and direct-to-customer communication to compete with larger retailers.
