  • The only podcast I can listen to in the car with my wife

My wife actually finds the banter to be terribly entertaining and I find that *many/most* of their answers to issues that homebrewers actually face in the regular to be well-researched or at least a viewpoint that I can look up myself and verify that it’s wrong if it sounds hinky.

Parti-Gyle Brewing, IPA Freshness, & Backsweetening Kombucha – Episode 463
Q: What about the practical steps for timing and sparging when running Parti-Gyle to maximize yield and flavor?
Use batch or fly sparging with attention to pH, monitor gravity after the first runnings, correct with small additions if needed, and decide whether to do reiteration or adjustments to ensure the final runnings support a reasonable second beer and overall efficiency.
Parti-Gyle Brewing, IPA Freshness, & Backsweetening Kombucha – Episode 463
Q: Is your second Parti-Gyle beer going to depend on the grain bill of the first beer, or can you plan a separate style like an Irish Red if the first beer is stout?
Yes, you can choose a complementary second beer based on the first runnings and roasted malts; options include an Irish Red or a Guinness-like profile, depending on the roasted character and target gravity, while using software or brewhouse tactics to balance runnings.
Parti-Gyle Brewing, IPA Freshness, & Backsweetening Kombucha – Episode 463
Q: I've been planning to brew a massive Imperial stout for the winter, but I hate the idea of wasting all those sugars left in the grain bed after I collect the first runnings. How do you actually plan a Parti-Gyle recipe for two different beers from a single mash?
By separating the first runnings and checking OG to decide if the big beer is ready, then estimating remaining runnings and gravity for a lighter second beer, possibly using a reiterated mash or adding small amounts of extra malt to boost gravity as needed.
Mastering the Basics: Yeast Harvesting, Base Malts, and Mash Ratios – Ep. 470
Q: Which base malts are suggested for a simple blonde ale, and how does yeast choice influence the final character?
The guidance is to consider Pilsner as a clean backbone and experiment with Maris Otter, Golden Promise, and possibly a touch of a Kolsch or other yeasts to introduce subtle flavor without overwhelming the beer, with emphasis on keeping the malt bill simple and using yeast to provide personality.
Mastering the Basics: Yeast Harvesting, Base Malts, and Mash Ratios – Ep. 470
Q: For someone transitioning from brew-in-a-bag to sparging, what water-to-grain ratios and sparge practices do you recommend?
They explain that sparge decisions depend on vessel size and target volumes; starting with a traditional mash ratio around 1.25 quarts per pound and sparging to hit volume is common, while some experiments with no-sparge can yield high-quality wort if volumes and fermentability align, and acidifying sparge water can prevent tannin extraction.
