  • Great Pod, Less Malaika

Malaika is a real weak spot in this podcast. I enjoy her articles, but her tendency to interrupt and ramble makes her a poor podcast guest.

  • Love the Podcast—But Let’s Talk Backes & Strauss

    Hey Hodinkee Team,

Huge fan of the podcast—it’s the perfect mix of deep horology and great storytelling. But can we get some tea on Backes & Strauss? They’ve got the world’s oldest diamond company cred, ties to Franck Muller, and some wild designs—what’s their real place in modern watchmaking?

    Keep up the great work!

  • Now unlistenable

I’ve listened to the podcast from the beginning, but Malaika’s interruptions of other hosts and content are horrible.

  • I’m trying - I am

I’m really trying hard to like this podcast because the subject really interests me. But the woman with the overly-affected, drawn out vocal fry just makes it impossible to take this show seriously. It’s like the coffee shop scene in Loudermilk.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

The Business of Watches [027] Angelus and Arnold & Son CEO Pascal Béchu
Q: How does the company approach price increases given gold and currency volatility?
They have applied selective price increases of 2-5% tied to precious metal costs and currency effects, while maintaining no price increases in Swiss francs for several years; a new price increase tied to gold is planned for April, with care to preserve value and price elasticity across key markets like the US.
The Business of Watches [027] Angelus and Arnold & Son CEO Pascal Béchu
Q: What is the current price range for Arnold & Son and Angelus pieces?
Arnold & Son ranges roughly from 16,000 Swiss francs to around 200,000 CHF, with bespoke pieces potentially reaching half a million; the average is around 40,000-45,000 CHF. Angelus offers a modern range from about 23,000 CHF for the Chronodate in titanium/carbon to under 50,000 CHF for the Tourbillon skeletonized, with La Fabrique pieces starting around 16,000 CHF up to 32,000 CHF for gold versions.
The Business of Watches [028] Studio Underd0g Founder Richard Benc
Q: What is the balance between collaborations and core collections for the brand going forward?
While collaborations have broadened reach and allowed you to reach higher price points, the focus will shift back to core collections to maintain identity, credibility, and accessibility for buyers while preserving room for selective high-end partnerships.
The Business of Watches [028] Studio Underd0g Founder Richard Benc
Q: Why pursue owning the Horologium assembly facility, and what impact does it have on the brand?
Owning the facility reduces reliance on third parties, increases control over the process, enables a showroom and assembly experience, and supports long-term growth with higher credibility and efficiency.
The Business of Watches [028] Studio Underd0g Founder Richard Benc
Q: How did Studio Underd0g start and evolve into a UK-based watch brand with in-house assembly?
It began as a passion project during COVID, built on design-led philosophy and a deliberate shift to UK assembly, leveraging supplier relationships gained from years of industry experience to scale production.
