  • Great Podcast - Terrible French Accent

In general, I love the podcast. Keep it coming. But, can Andy please stop with the horrific French pronunciations? They are so tortured and overwrought. Andy is terrific otherwise, but please, no môr.

  • Great Pod, Less Malaika

Malaika is a real weak spot in this podcast. I enjoy her articles, but her tendency to interrupt and ramble makes her a poor podcast guest.

  • Love the Podcast—But Let’s Talk Backes & Strauss

    Hey Hodinkee Team,

Huge fan of the podcast—it’s the perfect mix of deep horology and great storytelling. But can we get some tea on Backes & Strauss? They’ve got the world’s oldest diamond company cred, ties to Franck Muller, and some wild designs—what’s their real place in modern watchmaking?

    Keep up the great work!

I’ve listened to the podcast from the beginning, but Malaika’s interruptions of other hosts and content are horrible.

The Business of Watches [030] Q&A Episode - Your Business Questions Answered By The Hodinkee Team
Q: Bobby G asks about mono-brand boutiques versus multi-brand boutiques and the K-shaped retail trend.
The discussion covers how some brands are consolidating to mono-brand stores for tighter control, while others continue multi-brand distributions to reach new customers; the balance depends on brand strategy, market, and access to customers, with some markets showing a swing back toward multi-brand presence as the market evolves.
The Business of Watches [030] Q&A Episode - Your Business Questions Answered By The Hodinkee Team
Q: Kyle Sin asks whether brands chase enthusiasts' demand or stick to their release schedules, and how much weight is given to enthusiast input.
The hosts acknowledge a recent whiplash in pace due to a spike in attention and spending, but argue that brands still respond to market demand and business pressures; the reality is that mass-market considerations, production capabilities, and shareholder expectations shape release calendars more than enthusiast desire alone.
The Business of Watches [030] Q&A Episode - Your Business Questions Answered By The Hodinkee Team
Q: Ninja Hamster asks if 3D printing will democratize movement manufacture.
The panel explains that while the technology may enable CAD-driven prototyping and some components, the essential pieces like hairsprings and mainsprings, as well as the need for extreme precision, keep fully printed movements from becoming common; few brands see a near-term path to widespread in-house movement production.
The Business of Watches [029] Benjamin Arabov, CEO Of Jacob & Co.
Q: What would you hold up as the most innovative piece recently and why?
The Astronomia Regulator stands out as an embodiment of the brand's approach, combining a miniature cosmos of moving parts with three-time displays and a 360-degree movement in one minute, representing both homage to the collection and advancement in technical execution.
The Business of Watches [029] Benjamin Arabov, CEO Of Jacob & Co.
Q: Describe to me what the brand is, what kind of watches and pieces that you make, if you had to give me the 10 second elevator pitch.
The brand is known for innovative, highly visual timepieces that blend design with high complications, delivering watches that people often react to with 'I have never seen this before' and positioning Jacob & Co. at the intersection of luxury, spectacle, and technical mastery.
