  • Great Pod, Less Malaika

Malaika is a real weak spot in this podcast. I enjoy her articles, but her tendency to interrupt and ramble makes her a poor podcast guest.

  • Love the Podcast—But Let’s Talk Backes & Strauss

    Hey Hodinkee Team,

Huge fan of the podcast—it’s the perfect mix of deep horology and great storytelling. But can we get some tea on Backes & Strauss? They’ve got the world’s oldest diamond company cred, ties to Franck Muller, and some wild designs—what’s their real place in modern watchmaking?

    Keep up the great work!

  • Now unlistenable

I’ve listened to the podcast from the beginning, but Malaika’s interruptions of other hosts and content are horrible.

  • I’m trying - I am

I’m really trying hard to like this podcast because the subject really interests me. But the woman with the overly-affected, drawn out vocal fry just makes it impossible to take this show seriously. It’s like the coffee shop scene in Loudermilk.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

The Business of Watches [021] La Joux-Perret CEO Jean-Claude Eggen
Q: So Jean-Claude Eggen, we are in La Chaux-de-Fonds with the CEO of La Joux-Perret—what is the current role you play in the Swiss watch industry?
La Joux-Perret serves as a movement manufacturer with a broad customer base, focusing on independent strategy while leveraging the Citizen Group backing to develop both quartz and mechanical movements, including solar Quartz for TAG Heuer and other brands, with a clear plan to grow volumes and advance technology.
The Business of Watches [020] Doxa CEO Jan Edocs
Q: What markets are most important for Doxa and how do you approach expansion?
The US is the largest market and a key growth driver; expansion follows a west-to-east approach, with careful market-by-market tailoring, including local product tweaks (like Middle East diamonds) to fit regional preferences while preserving brand DNA.
The Business of Watches [020] Doxa CEO Jan Edocs
Q: How does Doxa balance online and offline sales to protect brand value?
We maintain exclusivity online, distribute through a solid, selective retail network, and avoid heavy price discounting; the online platform supports retail, not undermines it, with a goal of two-click access to the collection.
The Business of Watches [017] Oliver Müller, The Man Behind The Numbers For The Morgan Stanley Swiss Watcher Report
Q: What is the Morgan Stanley Swiss Watcher Report, and what is it trying to achieve?
It is a financial analysis aimed at Morgan Stanley clients that aggregates and cross‑checks information from suppliers, brands, and markets to estimate production and revenue for Swiss watch brands, focusing on comparable retail value shares rather than brand‑level exclusivity to ensure a consistent measurement across players.
The Business of Watches [014] Baume & Mercier CEO Michael Guenoun Talks Strategy On The Eve Of The Brand's Sale By Richemont
Q: How does Baume & Mercier plan to maintain its position in an increasingly competitive watch market?
Guenoun emphasizes maintaining authenticity and focusing on the company's rich heritage and innovation in design, rather than shifting towards premiumization.
