  • I wish I had heard this earlier!

At 61 I had suffered 2 minor fractures and felt it important to have a bone density scan. My doc , a female, denied it as she said I was not to get it until age 65. I took advantage of the traveling health scans, part of their testing is bone density. It showed I was in the red zone. I took the results to my doc, she responded that their testing is often incorrect;however, begrudgingly ordered the scan. It also showed I had osteopenia. The podcast that Nora did on bone density was enlightening. ... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

We’re Going Backwards: The $20 Billion Plan to Close the Gender Healthcare Gap
Q: How can patients participate in solving the health gap and influence policy?
Patients can advocate with Congress, use NIH funding channels, educate themselves with society resources, and document their medications and symptoms to better engage with clinicians.
Bone Loss: A Silent Disease
Q: At what age should we request bone scans, and who should have a bone scan earlier than the recommended age?
Bone scans and density tests are best considered during the menopause transition, with earlier testing for those at special risk factors (e.g., breast cancer patients on aromatase inhibitors, early menopause, prolonged steroid use, etc.). Insurance coverage often follows guidelines that test by age 65 unless risk factors justify earlier testing, and shared decision-making with a clinician helps determine the appropriate timing.
Healthful LIVE with Olympic Gold Medalist Aly Raisman
Q: What messages do you want to share with listeners about advocating for their health?
She advocates for acknowledging difficulty, journaling, therapy, and building a trusted support network, plus practical steps like bringing a buddy to appointments when needed.
Healthful LIVE with Olympic Gold Medalist Aly Raisman
Q: How has your wellness routine changed since you retired from competition?
Raisman explains she shifted from six-day training weeks to prioritizing rest, listening to her body, and moving away from chronic burnout, which has improved her overall mental and physical health.
The Blood Donation Blind Spot
Q: What are the minimum and maximum ages to donate blood?
The minimum varies by state, commonly 17, with some states allowing 16 with guardian consent; there is no maximum age as long as the donor is healthy.
