越调除戏曲形式外还有曲艺和木偶两支分支。1942年河南发生大旱，期间许多越调艺人（如张桂兰）等都曾转入过地摊说唱，等灾荒过后，再重新回到舞台来演唱戏曲。木偶的越调分支在南阳一带十分盛行，其中有些民间职业木偶艺人至今仍十分活跃。越调的主奏乐器早期是象鼻四弦，后来一般用坠胡。 [1] 越调自诞生地四外流传时，“音随地改”，形成了“上路”、“下路”、“南边”等地域流派。生路越调以南阳为中心，是越调的母调。唱腔质朴、婉转、细腻、典雅而又不失豪放、粗犷、大气，间有秦腔的元素。下路越调以许昌、漯河、周口为中心，又称“小越调”。唱腔具有火爆、明快、高亢、豪放的特点。南边越调以襄阳为中心向十堰等地扩散，与上路越调比较相似。
