  • Episode proposal

While labor has learned from this history, so has management. In the show from Socialism 2024, Emma says that investment strikes are one managements strategy. As she suggests, this applies to the current UAW strike threat against Stellantis. You touch on management strategies as each struggle is depicted in the podcast. Could you have an episode that covers the continuity and innovations in the evolution of capitalist corporations’ strategies against the labor movement over the whole sweep of th... more

  • Fine educational show

I disagree with some points but deeply appreciate the show. Especially impressed to hear Judy Stepan Norris as guest (whom I’ve met). Following the listener who corrected pronunciation of Reading PA, when I was in the UE (as shop worker and steward), the name Matles rhymed with hatless, not rattles. But we could have been wrong in assuming that.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

17. War
Q: What do you think was gained and what do you think was lost for the CIO?
An institutional weight and security was gained, but there was a certain kind of political timidity and reliance on government control that constrains rank-and-file activism.
8. The Spirit of 1936
Q: How would you describe the Second New Deal?
It's a way of talking about the transformation of the administration in retrospect and the politics of the period.
Bonus Episode: What the CIO Reveals About the Movement Today
Q: Was there ever serious consideration within the CIO for launching a labor party?
Yes, there was significant discussion about a labor party within the CIO, especially around 1949, but the failure to achieve it was influenced by political dynamics, including the reliance on the Democratic Party.
Bonus Episode: What the CIO Reveals About the Movement Today
Q: What should we learn from the Popular Front era about political engagement in the labor movement today?
The Popular Front allowed broader coalitions to emerge and linked various working-class movements, suggesting that contemporary unions can also engage in wider political struggles without losing their focus on workplace issues.
Bonus Episode: What the CIO Reveals About the Movement Today
Q: What does the current labor movement need to consider regarding the role of the NLRB and its effectiveness?
The labor movement should not overly rely on the proceduralism of the NLRB, as historical experiences show that it can limit the dynamism and grassroots organizing necessary to build real power among workers.
