Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Lin King on 'Taiwan Travelogue' (Nominated for the International Booker Prize-2026)
Q: Why did you choose to render the three languages in their original forms rather than imposing Mandarin as a default?
To honor the authentic linguistic layers of Taiwan's history and to avoid erasing the real linguistic diversity of places and people, even when that complicates English readers' navigation.
Lin King on 'Taiwan Travelogue' (Nominated for the International Booker Prize-2026)
Q: Could you summarize what makes Taiwan Travelogue unique as a translation project?
It is a multilingual, meta-textual work that uses forewords, afternotes, and translator notes to blur the lines between fiction, history, and translation, highlighting how language choices shape cultural memory and political histories.
Padma Viswanathan on 'On Earth As it is Beneath'(Nominated for the International Booker Prize-2026)
Q: Can you share details about your Living Tamil Lit Fest involvement and how translation figures into that?
The Living Tamil Lit Fest in New York is a gathering to celebrate Tamil literature and translation, with translators and writers participating to bridge languages and cultures. My involvement, alongside other Tamil-language writers and translators, underscores my commitment to expanding access to South Asian literatures through translation.
Padma Viswanathan on 'On Earth As it is Beneath'(Nominated for the International Booker Prize-2026)
Q: What drew you to Ana Paula Maia's work and to Charco Press for On Earth As It Is Beneath?
I was drawn to Maia's stark, terse prose and its careful balance of humor and violence. Charco Press connected me to her work and supported a translation that could bring Maia's voice to an English-speaking readership, which is how this collaboration began.
Padma Viswanathan on 'On Earth As it is Beneath'(Nominated for the International Booker Prize-2026)
Q: How did you start translating from Portuguese to English, and how has that shaped your own writing?
Translation became a daily, writing-like practice for me, with the discipline of working in the same time block each day and writing in multiple voices to capture different writers' perspectives. It also opened doors to new authors and projects, influencing my own narrative choices and voice as a writer.
