Curiously soothing. The VG knowledge here is truly impressive.
Been listening to this podcast for years now and they've done a great job of steadily improving without losing their original feel but speaking of a "losing feeling"...
I'd like to nominate (Jurassic Park) Trespasser for the PC. It's a terrible game with interesting ideas and I'd like to hear HG101 complain about it at length only to struggle to give it a ranking as they weigh its intent vs its execution (a frequent and highly enjoyable staple of the podcast)
I’ve been listening off and on to this podcast for years and it always invigorates me to try new games I haven’t played before or revisit classics. All the hosts provide a unique perspective on games and have their strengths and weaknesses toward different genres. I’m glad this exists as a fan of obscure and niche video games.
I nominate g-taste for the ps2!
Great podcast, love the bants of the hosts and their views on the games, even if their takes sometimes makes me wanna give em a quick slap across the chops. Appreciate the wide range of games, from the most iconic of list topping classics to the dregs of Game Gear licensed muck.
Neo Turf Masters was robbed though.
I'd like to nominate Top Banana for the Amiga. It's a game that deserves discussion. Review by Drpepperfan.
When retronauts first started the show was these grumpy nerds who sneered at the games they were covering.
Gradually they got better at podcasting and also took a more thoughtful approach to retro games.
HCG seems to be stuck in that early mode of retronauts where they are smart and knowledgeable but seem to constantly think they’re better than what they’re covering.
Key themes from listener reviews, highlighting what works and what could be improved about the show.

Content centers on in-depth explorations of retro and cult video games, with a strong emphasis on ranking and comparing titles across eras. Episodes blend historical context, design analysis, and personal anecdotes, often featuring rotating guests and a panel that highlights diverse game genres, platforms, and development eras. The show is noted for thorough research, thoughtful critique, and lively banter, delivering both nostalgia and fresh perspectives that help listeners decide which titles deserve a revisit or a spot on a top-list ranking. A notable strength is the rotating-host dynamic and a broad catalogue of niche titles, which makes it appealing to fans who enjoy deep dives beyond mainstream classics.
