  • Vague and Unhelpful Rhetoric

Changing attitudes around density and recognition of one’s privilege is hardly a template for increased affordability.

Toronto and other Canadian cities have already made major zoning changes and billions are being invested. It’s still not enough… it won’t be enough.

There is not enough money available without massive changes in tax and public policy. You criticize government for not being bold. You have not been bold and direct as a podcast. Be practical and direct about solutions... more

  • Fantastic!

This is hands down my favourite podcast. I’ve been sharing episodes with my baby boomer parents to help educate them…they mostly get defensive, and still point fingers that we (millennials) don’t manage our money well. We have a long way to go but research like this, with glaring evidence-based facts, helps our conversations. Please keep it up! I’d love to hear an episode about the impacts of the universal childcare program and the current shortage of daycares and day care providers, along with ... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Cash subsidies should be targeted. Essential services, universal.
Q: Why should Old Age Security be means-tested rather than age-based?
Because CPP already provides a largely universal base, OAS should focus on those with lower financial security and not simply on age; mean-testing would help address senior poverty while preserving universal care funded through taxation.
Cash subsidies should be targeted. Essential services, universal.
Q: Explain that distinction between cash subsidies and universal services.
Cash subsidies should be targeted to need and circumstances rather than age, while essential services like medical care, education, and child care remain universal at the point of entry to ensure equity and access.
GenSqueeze joins CBC’s Day 6 to talk structural ageism in Canada’s budget
Q: Your work focuses on generational fairness. When it comes to this budget, does it deliver that?
Paul explains that the budget falls short for younger generations, highlighting the mismatch between promised sacrifice and actual spending in housing, child care, and youth employment, while older generations receive relatively larger support through programs like Old Age Security. He suggests reforms such as phasing out OAS at lower income thresholds to free resources for younger generations.
How Housing Affects Choice - Feedswap with Aborsh, a podcast about abortion in Canada
Q: What can be done to reform the housing system to prevent these intergenerational inequities?
Panelists advocate for treating housing as a public good, strengthening tenant organizing, reforming zoning and subsidies, and implementing a robust National Housing Strategy that centers the most vulnerable.
How Housing Affects Choice - Feedswap with Aborsh, a podcast about abortion in Canada
Q: So how has housing contributed to your reproductive decisions?
The guest explains that housing instability and unaffordability directly impacted decisions about pregnancy and parenting, with fear of housing loss influencing choices and delays in starting a family.
