  • Vague and Unhelpful Rhetoric

Changing attitudes around density and recognition of one’s privilege is hardly a template for increased affordability.

Toronto and other Canadian cities have already made major zoning changes and billions are being invested. It’s still not enough… it won’t be enough.

There is not enough money available without massive changes in tax and public policy. You criticize government for not being bold. You have not been bold and direct as a podcast. Be practical and direct about solutions... more

  • Fantastic!

This is hands down my favourite podcast. I’ve been sharing episodes with my baby boomer parents to help educate them…they mostly get defensive, and still point fingers that we (millennials) don’t manage our money well. We have a long way to go but research like this, with glaring evidence-based facts, helps our conversations. Please keep it up! I’d love to hear an episode about the impacts of the universal childcare program and the current shortage of daycares and day care providers, along with ... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Young Canadians are miserable. Here's why....
Q: How do housing costs specifically drive the happiness gap among young Canadians?
Housing affordability affects not just monthly budgets but fundamental life milestones like leaving the parental home and starting a family, with the cost burden closely linked to lower life satisfaction.
Young Canadians are miserable. Here's why....
Q: What's the evidence that this is about policy choices and not just individual hardships?
The data show the decline predates COVID and aligns with rising costs and policy patterns that favor older generations, such as higher allocations to seniors and less investment in housing and education for the young.
Old Age Security: National Poll Reveals Majority Want Change
Q: Paul, let's start with the big headline. What does this new poll reveal?
The poll shows that about three quarters of Canadians, including a majority of seniors, support reforming OAS to reduce benefits for higher-income households and repurpose savings to tackle senior poverty and enhance affordability for younger generations, a level of support that is stable over time and crosses party lines.
Cash subsidies should be targeted. Essential services, universal.
Q: Why should Old Age Security be means-tested rather than age-based?
Because CPP already provides a largely universal base, OAS should focus on those with lower financial security and not simply on age; mean-testing would help address senior poverty while preserving universal care funded through taxation.
Cash subsidies should be targeted. Essential services, universal.
Q: Explain that distinction between cash subsidies and universal services.
Cash subsidies should be targeted to need and circumstances rather than age, while essential services like medical care, education, and child care remain universal at the point of entry to ensure equity and access.
