  • Top notch equine nutrition podcast! Thank you so much for helping my horse!

I have a horse with free fecal water (FFW) syndrome. I listened to Dr. Nerida’s podcast episode about FFW, and I started feeding beet pulp from Dr. Nerida’s recommendation to add more diverse fibre into the horse’s diet, and within days, my horse showed no signs of FFW. I cannot thank Dr. Nerida enough for her advice. I truly appreciate her sharing her valuable knowledge. As a student majoring in Animal Science and a horse owner, I have learned so much from listening to the Happy Horse Nutrition... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

23. The Guardian Mindset: How Horse Nutrition Impacts Welfare & Performance
Q: What is the single biggest mistake you see horse owners make with feeding their horses?
Lack of roughage is the primary mistake, followed by overweight conditions due to excessive energy intake; many issues stem from imbalanced diets where forage is insufficient or poorly managed relative to workload.
23. The Guardian Mindset: How Horse Nutrition Impacts Welfare & Performance
Q: What are the areas of feeding and nutrition that the FEI are most focused on with regards to nutrition?
The FEI framework emphasizes core welfare elements including forage availability, fiber quality and quantity, and careful management of feed to prevent misfeeds and supplement overuse; nutrition is seen as integral to welfare, though the baseline messaging and basics still need reinforcement.
9. Your horse’s hindgut microbes and their impact on... everything!
Q: Why is microbial diversity important for performance and health?
A diverse microbiome provides a broader range of enzymes to digest various substrates, ensures redundancy so knocking out one microbe doesn't collapse digestion, supports immune function and gut-brain interactions, and in horses has been linked to better performance and resilience during stress or dietary changes.
9. Your horse’s hindgut microbes and their impact on... everything!
Q: Can you explain quorum sensing in simple terms for horse owners?
Quorum sensing is the process by which microbes release chemical signals into their environment; when enough similar microbes are present, these signals trigger coordinated changes in their genes, such as turning on certain enzymes, enabling them to act together like a concerted group.
25. Breaking the Horse Nutrition Mold: How Ciaron Maher Racing are Challenging Status Quo in Australian Thoroughbred Racing
Q: What was the role of microbiome testing in shaping their approach?
Microbiome testing provided concrete evidence of shifts toward more fiber-digesting bacteria and away from lactic-acid–driven communities, validating dietary changes and guiding formulation for horses like St. George.
