  • Top notch equine nutrition podcast! Thank you so much for helping my horse!

I have a horse with free fecal water (FFW) syndrome. I listened to Dr. Nerida’s podcast episode about FFW, and I started feeding beet pulp from Dr. Nerida’s recommendation to add more diverse fibre into the horse’s diet, and within days, my horse showed no signs of FFW. I cannot thank Dr. Nerida enough for her advice. I truly appreciate her sharing her valuable knowledge. As a student majoring in Animal Science and a horse owner, I have learned so much from listening to the Happy Horse Nutrition... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

25. Breaking the Horse Nutrition Mold: How Ciaron Maher Racing are Challenging Status Quo in Australian Thoroughbred Racing
Q: What was the role of microbiome testing in shaping their approach?
Microbiome testing provided concrete evidence of shifts toward more fiber-digesting bacteria and away from lactic-acid–driven communities, validating dietary changes and guiding formulation for horses like St. George.
25. Breaking the Horse Nutrition Mold: How Ciaron Maher Racing are Challenging Status Quo in Australian Thoroughbred Racing
Q: Can you summarize the three major feeding changes and why they matter?
Feed horses loose and hay before work to buffer the stomach, keep hay available continuously to support forage-based digestion, and switch to more digestible grain with fiber-backed energy, which together reduce digestive stress and improve energy delivery.
25. Breaking the Horse Nutrition Mold: How Ciaron Maher Racing are Challenging Status Quo in Australian Thoroughbred Racing
Q: What led Ciaron Maher Racing to challenge traditional feeding models and adopt science-based nutrition?
We questioned the why behind the long-standing feeding practices, engaged Nerida to review procedures, and standardized feeding across all locations to ensure horses receive consistent, gut-friendly nutrition that supports welfare and performance.
20. Horse Nutrition Q&A: Free Faecal Water Syndrome, Fibre Diversity & Putting Weight on Thin Broodmares
Q: What practical steps can a broodmare-owner take to gain weight after foaling without destabilizing the hindgut?
Provide abundant pasture, introduce protein-rich but digestible feeds like loose and alfalfa gradually, monitor starch intake to avoid hindgut disruption, and consider balanced nutrition using a specialized app to ensure meeting nutrient needs.
12. Horse Nutrition Q&A: Ulcers, Soy, Nitrates & More with Nerida and Orla
Q: Okay. So in one of your episodes is the hay episode, you mentioned imeprazole. And then it made me think a lot about questions that used to get asked about people using imeprazole when they're traveling, going to certain events, when they know that hay is going to be taken away from them. Is that a controversial thing? Is it a good thing?
Ameprazole is a veterinary drug and should not be used as a blanket preventive without veterinary guidance. It can reduce acid production and help prevent ulcers during travel, but it's not appropriate for long-term use or weight loss strategies; always consult a vet before using it as a preventive.
