Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Redefining Possibility: Performance Beyond Limits
Q: How can therapists best support a child with a hand difference in a clinical setting?
Normalize differences, provide practical adaptive strategies, help families plan for late childhood transitions, and reinforce the child's agency by teaching responses to questions that validate the child's identity.
Redefining Possibility: Performance Beyond Limits
Q: What would you tell a parent of a child with a hand difference about supporting their kid?
Lead with confidence-building, age-appropriate explanations and encourage the child to be themselves; focus on empowering their child to participate in activities, seek supportive communities, and celebrate progress rather than dwelling on limitations.
2025 Vargas Award Recipient
Q: How did you prepare for the mission and ensure long-term impact after you left?
I connected with the local hospital team in advance, coordinated supplies through vendors, trained local therapists in splinting and taping, established a repository of home programs, and used ongoing communication via WhatsApp and video calls to support continued learning after the team returned home.
2025 Vargas Award Recipient
Q: What were the most common injuries or treatment diagnoses you encountered on the mission?
The most frequent cases were carpal tunnel issues and trigger finger, with many other patients requiring post-operative care, bracing for immobilization, and hand therapy education; the team also encountered more complex cases like tendon transfers and a brachial plexus nerve transfer, which required advanced planning and collaboration.
Research Collaborations
Q: If you would give us a take home message for those just starting in research or who are maybe junior researchers, what would you recommend for them to diminish some of their fear or anxiety about collaborating with others to do research?
Using the resources at ASHT, attending research community meetings, and asking questions are valuable steps for newcomers in research.
