'Amen': When Susannah Cibber had sung her aria “He was despised” at the premiere of Messiah, Dr. Patrick Delany was so deeply moved that he spontaneously exclaimed: "Woman, for this, be all thy sins forgiven." On 13 August 1742 Faulkner’s Dublin Jour... more

I happened upon this podcast while at the gym and found myself laughing out loud at the antics of Handel (I had no idea!) I thoroughly enjoyed these well told stories. They paint a broader picture of how Handel’s Messiah was created and give me a greater appreciation for the piece. Delightful.
Who’s recording of The Messiah are you using for the little snippets of music?
I am not ‘into’ history normally, nor do I listen to music from the 17 hundreds. However I loved this whole podcast on Handel’s messiah. It greatly increased my enjoyment when I saw the piece. Thank you for making this.
I have enjoyed Handel’s “Messiah” for many years - including as a singer - and knew some of the details of its history, but didn’t know the in-depth story of its composition and first performance. Just a few episodes in, and I’m already wanting to binge-listen! The musical excerpts are well chosen and add to the overall “historical effect”. Great work!
