  • The Mental Game of Golf

I am so very grateful to Chase and Dr. Raymond for their insightful and thoughtful discussions on all aspects of the mental side of the game of golf. While I have had golf mechanics lessons for a quite a while, I have ofter thought a more valuable instruction or help would be on the mental game. This podcast delivers in helping to understand the challenges that are part of that mental side.

  • Play the Shot Like a Poker Hand

This podcast has been really helpful for thinking about the mental side of golf. One idea that stuck with me was the concept of pursuit-based golf vs. avoidance-based golf.

It made me realize something about my own mindset. I play a fair amount of poker, and in poker I’m totally comfortable with probability and risk. You can flop top pair with a great kicker and still lose sometimes. You get drawn out on, someone has a better hand, or you take a bad beat. But you still make the right play becau... more

This is my favorite golf podcast. I think Raymond is the best mental coach in the business and Chase gives good insight from a teaching professional’s perspective. If you want to improve your game, give this one a listen.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Dr. Pete Kadushin: The Stories That Shape Your Game
Q: When is it appropriate to blame the swing versus the situation or context?
Blaming the swing is appropriate only if the cue genuinely reflects a mechanical issue that can be adjusted without breaking the flow. More often, it's the context, expectations, and emotional state that drive performance, so the best approach is to return to neutral, check alignment or baseline, and then decide whether an adjustment is necessary based on many shots, not just one.
Dr. Pete Kadushin: The Stories That Shape Your Game
Q: How do swing thoughts interact with a golfer's underlying beliefs and narratives?
Swing thoughts are a window into a golfer's beliefs; if a player holds a rigid belief about a swing cue, it can narrow the range of successful outcomes. A flexible, task-focused mindset that prioritizes staying present and trusting the process tends to support better performance than clinging to specific swing keys.
Q & A 11.0
Q: What can be done about choking and the yips from a psychological perspective?
They describe choking and the yips as anxiety-driven, trauma-like responses rather than purely mechanical issues, and suggest long-term work on psychological skills, accepting vulnerability, and reducing judgment from others to break the anxiety cycle.
Q & A 11.0
Q: How should players approach changes in equipment when moving up levels, such as from amateurs to tour level?
Both hosts emphasize that while equipment evolves, players must learn to adapt progressively, avoiding abrupt changes that disrupt performance; layering adjustments in a staged, manageable way helps players retain confidence and continuity.
Q & A 11.0
Q: What are your thoughts on bifurcation (rolling back the golf ball) and its impact on the sport?
They view bifurcation as a contentious, impractical idea that could harm the sport's integrity and marketability by creating expensive, divergent equipment paths for pros and amateurs, potentially undermining the fun and challenge of courses and the meaning of competition.
