  • Glad to finally be on board!…

I’ve been curious about this show for months b/c it always comes up on searches with the most amazing guests. But, it always seemed maybe a little too intelligent and high brow for me, but after seeing The Wire (and Kolchak) coverage, I had to check it out. Very accessible and super informative. Host is cool and not self-important at all .

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

The Phantom (1996)
Q: Could you speak to the casting of Billy Zane and how his preparation shaped the film?
Billy was attached from early on and committed to a physically demanding portrayal. He trained hard for months before production, and his embodiment of the Phantom helped anchor the film's action scenes and overall look, allowing us to approach the character as a dynamic, believable hero rather than a purely stylized mask.
The Phantom (1996)
Q: What were the main influences for tone and look, especially coming from a comic book origin?
I wanted a big, rousing adventure with a vibe similar to Indiana Jones, emphasizing spectacle and a sense of scale without losing character focus. The visuals, color, and practical design—like authentic locations and period production design—were chosen to give it a rich, timeless feel rather than a glossy, modern look.
The Phantom (1996)
Q: How did you come to be involved with the project and approach the screenplay?
Paramount approached me, I was finishing Operation Dumbo Drops, and they asked me to read the script and consider directing. I felt Jeffrey Baum's script captured the adventurous spirit well, and I aimed to keep the tone as a good old-fashioned adventure, while staying faithful to the Phantom's legacy.
Matewan (1987)
Q: How did you approach lighting to evoke the period without modern conveniences?
They used period-appropriate lighting sources like kerosene lamps and gas lamps, added controlled light with Chinese lanterns, and relied on ambient practicals, while keeping a strong emphasis on natural textures and shadows to suggest scarcity and tension.
Matewan (1987)
Q: What were the practical constraints during filming in West Virginia and how did they shape the final look?
Budget and time constraints pushed Sayles and Wexler to rely on real locations, local cast, available light, and practical effects, which in turn gave the film its authentic, documentary feel rather than a polished studio aesthetic.
