  • Very informative

We learned about the Olin college of engineering from your podcast. It was not on our list of prospective schools, but we visited while we were in Boston looking at other schools, then mentioned it to our college counselor, and he said she should apply. which she did, and was thrilled to have been accepted. She loves it so far. This would never have happened but for your podcast.

Navigating Middle School
Q: What options exist if a student doesn't qualify for Cal Grant?
There are other supports such as Middle Class Scholarship for eligible families, institutional merit aid, Pell Grants, and private scholarships; combining various sources can still make college affordable.
Navigating Middle School
Q: Is it easier to obtain Cal Grant if you apply in high school rather than after starting college?
Yes, it is generally easier to obtain Cal Grant when applying in high school because the thresholds and GPA expectations align with high school records, and there is a formal process with automatic counselor GPA submission.
Navigating Middle School
Q: What defines a Cal Grant and how does a student qualify?
A Cal Grant is a state grant with different categories (A for tuition coverage, B for living expenses in some cases, and C for vocational programs). Qualification depends on GPA thresholds (3.0 for A, 2.0 for B), income and asset limits, FAFSA submission, and high school GPA submission, with priority given to high school graduates.
All About The Classical Learning Test
Q: Is the CLT accepted everywhere, and should a 10th- or 11th-grader consider it along with the ACT/SAT?
Not all schools accept the CLT yet; while hundreds of colleges have started accepting it, many still rely on the ACT/SAT, so families should check target schools' policies and consider CLT as a supplement rather than a replacement depending on list and timing.
The Cost of California Colleges; How to Choose from the Schools You've Been Admitted to; Why are Colleges Sending Me So Much Mail?
Q: How do you start thinking about establishing the factors that will be important for a student deciding where to enroll?
Start with introspection about the type of academic and campus environment you want, assess fit in terms of courses, mentorship, and learning style, and then consider whether the school aligns with those needs before weighing cost.
