  • Very informative

We learned about the Olin college of engineering from your podcast. It was not on our list of prospective schools, but we visited while we were in Boston looking at other schools, then mentioned it to our college counselor, and he said she should apply. which she did, and was thrilled to have been accepted. She loves it so far. This would never have happened but for your podcast.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

The Cost of California Colleges; How to Choose from the Schools You've Been Admitted to; Why are Colleges Sending Me So Much Mail?
Q: How do you start thinking about establishing the factors that will be important for a student deciding where to enroll?
Start with introspection about the type of academic and campus environment you want, assess fit in terms of courses, mentorship, and learning style, and then consider whether the school aligns with those needs before weighing cost.
The College Admission & Finance Year in Review
Q: Do we have to complete the FAFSA and the CSS Profile, and what are the realities of aid through FAFSA?
FAFSA is often required to access federal loans and sometimes aid; many families experience the FAFSA as a gateway to loans rather than grants, and CSS Profile captures more assets; timing and school policies matter in determining need-based aid.
The College Admission & Finance Year in Review
Q: Are there financial implications if we apply early decision or early action for college admissions?
Early action is not binding and has no immediate or long-term financial implications; early decision is binding and may affect scholarship opportunities, but you should still compare packages and know the true net cost before committing.
What Financial Aid Offices Wish Families Knew; What Admission Offices Wish Students Knew; What Students Wish College Knew - Featuring a Current High School Senior
Q: How should students approach communicating with admissions offices to improve their chances?
Ask thoughtful, specific questions that show real interest in the university, avoid generic inquiries, and follow up with meaningful updates or reflections on the conversation and essay—demonstrated interest and clarity matter in holistic reviews.
Are Colleges Still Accepting Applications?; How Many APs Do I Need To Take?; Federal Student Loan Update
Q: What changes to federal student loans should families be aware of?
Undergraduates retain their current limits, but Grad Plus is being eliminated for new borrowings; repayment is shifting to income-driven plans, affecting long-term planning and the total debt picture for graduate programs.
