  • I love Larry Chapp

I found this podcast after hearing Larry Chapp on another podcast, and now I prefer this one to the one that led me here. Larry Chapp’s commentary on Vatican II is always worth hearing as he has a gift for contextualizing Vatican II. I love his guests, and how he tries to live his faith in an orthodox yet radical way. I highly recommend listening, especially to any episodes with Michael Hanby.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Carol Olson joins Larry Chapp to discuss anti-Catholic dispensationalist fundamentalism
Q: What role did literature and the arts play in your faith journey?
Literature and beauty—Lewis, Chesterton, Newman, Hopkins, O'Connor, and other Anglo-Catholic writers—helped Olson see beyond doctrinal rigidity, illustrate the richness of Catholic tradition, and provide rest stops that ultimately supported his path to Catholicism.
Carol Olson joins Larry Chapp to discuss anti-Catholic dispensationalist fundamentalism
Q: How did you move from fundamentalism toward Catholicism?
Exposure to early Church Fathers, the Catechism, and Thomistic/Communio authors reframed his understanding of church history and theology, gradually breaking the evangelical bubble and guiding him toward the Catholic Church as a more coherent, beauty-rich tradition.
Carol Olson joins Larry Chapp to discuss anti-Catholic dispensationalist fundamentalism
Q: What was the religion you grew up with?
Olson describes a Pentecostal-leaning background in Plains, Montana, including a Church of God and a later Missionary Alliance congregation, followed by a major church split over the doctrine of eternal security, which led to the Plains Bible Chapel and a fundamentalist milieu.
Fr. Ameer Advani joins Larry Chapp to discuss his book on Ratzinger's theology of religions
Q: How did Vatican II change the Church's approach to salvation and other religions?
Vatican II introduced a shift from strict exclusivism to recognizing positive elements in other religions, while maintaining that salvation remains through Christ and the Church; the text highlights a fulfillment model and calls theologians to explore how grace arrives to non-Catholics.
Rodney Howsare joins Larry Chapp to discuss damn near everything
Q: How do the guests view post-liberalism in relation to Catholic tradition and politics?
Post-liberalism is seen as a necessary shift away from a liberal-meta-narrative that dominates politics, but it is not a single doctrine; it encompasses a variety of positions, all aiming to restore a sense of the common good grounded in Christian anthropology and the proper role of religion in public life.
