2月15日は「涅槃会（ねはんえ）」です。これは、仏教の開祖であるお釈迦さまが入滅（にゅうめつ）、すなわちその生涯を終えられた日の法要を指します。涅槃とはサンスクリット語で「ニルヴァーナ」といい、もともとは「火を吹き消すこと」を意味します。私たちの迷いである「煩悩の火」を吹き消した悟りの境地のことであり、中国では「滅度（めつど）」とも訳されました。

🔶宮型霊柩車の激減とその背景
かつて葬送の象徴だった、金飾りの施された「宮型霊柩車」が姿を消しつつあります。2003年には全国で2,000台以上が走っていましたが、現在は10分の1の220台ほどにまで激減しました。その背景には、近隣住民から「自宅の前を通るのは縁起が悪い」という苦情が寄せられるなど、死を忌み嫌い、遠ざけようとする意識の変化があります。現在では全国150以上の自治体で、火葬場への宮型霊柩車の乗り入れが制限されるようになっています。

今週は「迷信」を取り上げます。なかでも話題に上がりやすい丙午（ひのえうま）と出生数の揺れ、その背景にある物語、そして仏教的な受け止め方を整理します。
