Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

246. The human side of M&A, with Ira Rosenbloom
Q: What does a truly human-centered post-close look like?
It starts with top-level buy-in, continuous communication, early involvement of employees across levels, clear career paths, and transparent client communications to maintain trust and retention.
247. The CAS compliance tightrope, with Mike Manspeaker
Q: What best practices can firms adopt to avoid risk when blending CAS with attest services?
Adopt a robust client service plan up front, clearly delineate which services you will provide, ensure proper engagement letters that spell out what is not being done, and maintain a strong culture of quality. Consider placing boundaries to prevent 'wearing two hats' and use clear internal policies to separate CAS work from attest work, including independent vs. non-independent classifications for clients.
247. The CAS compliance tightrope, with Mike Manspeaker
Q: What professional standards apply when a firm provides CAS services and how do they differ from traditional attest engagements?
CAS engagements are governed by the AICPA Code of Conduct and, depending on whether the engagement could result in financial statements, may involve SARS-related considerations. If the engagement could trigger attest standards, independence rules and peer review come into play. For pure CAS work where a financial statement isn't the primary objective (per SARS-27), you can structure engagements to stay outside SARS and also outside full quality management requirements, while still adhering to ethics and competence.
244. The neuroscience of culture, with Don Rheem
Q: So I guess my first question is, I'm curious, how should business leaders begin to look at culture as a measurable business driver rather than something that's kind of quote unquote soft?
Culture should be treated as a science: measure the right engagement metrics (not just satisfaction), and use the data to create actionable plans and manager-specific improvements that raise engagement and performance.
241. What’s next for audit? With Christina Ho
Q: What does a more future-focused audit look like, and how should regulation evolve to support it?
A future-focused audit would be more digital, rely on full-population testing rather than sampling, and implement continuous auditing. Regulation should be agile and provide guidance that helps the profession adopt innovative technologies while safeguarding investor protection.
