Julia Dhar: Why Change Fails—and How Leaders Fix It
Q: What kinds of change stories do you recommend and how should leaders talk about change beyond just financial incentives?
Use three story types—threat, fitness, and destiny—matched to the change context, and involve people in deriving personal relevance, including non-financial motivations like community impact, personal growth, and team development. Q: As you've researched the book, what are some indicators that the change isn't working, and what have you seen as a path to success?
Key indicators include false alignment rather than true agreement, misaligned definitions of done, and missing pathways. Success comes from writing down the why, what, and how, ensuring real agreement, and building take-up through specific expectations and time for people to absorb the change.
