Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Guillaume ‘Gee’ Schmidt (Patta) in conversation with Dominique Nzeyimana
Q: What does the Nike Patta Wave project signify for Patta beyond a product release?
The Nike Wave collaboration is about deeper cultural resonance, not just a product drop; Patta produced original music and created a broader campaign to connect with music and African artists, underscoring that Patta aims to be a platform for culture, community, and shared creative risk, not only a brand.
Guillaume ‘Gee’ Schmidt (Patta) in conversation with Dominique Nzeyimana
Q: Why expand to cities like London and Milan, and how did you approach ownership in new markets?
Expansion was motivated by the need to be where the community and culture thrive, with London seen as a more feasible starting point due to existing proximity and receptivity; ownership in new markets was negotiated to balance control with local partnerships, particularly in Africa where half of the Legos store is owned by Nigerian partners to reflect the diaspora connection.
Guillaume ‘Gee’ Schmidt (Patta) in conversation with Dominique Nzeyimana
Q: How did Patta start and what were some of the first big hurdles you faced?
Patta began as a sneaker store fueled by a streetwear passion and a do-it-yourself hustle, with early challenges including parallel imports, securing top-tier brand accounts, and building a loyal community while remaining independent, which required constant travel, hands-on stock management, and a clear belief in their own taste and identity.
Stylist & Creative Director Karen Binns in conversation with Recho Omondi
Q: When did you realize you could make the jump from stylist to creative director, and what mental shift helped you own that role?
She explains that the transition was gradual and earned through undeniable receipts—visible, impactful work like projects with Tori Amos that demonstrated leadership and a capacity to drive creative visions beyond titles.
Stylist & Creative Director Karen Binns in conversation with Recho Omondi
Q: So Karen, if we rewound your career like a videotape, and we could go look at the first scene, tell us what the first scene of your fashion journey would be if it were a show.
She recalls her unconventional start, growing up in New York and discovering fashion outside formal education, through magazines, street aesthetics, and an early, bold choice that drew attention and opened doors in the art and fashion worlds.
