  • A podcast for everyone

For anyone with an internet connected device (basically everyone), this is a must listen podcast. The information Carey presents, the people interviewed and the privacy and security suggestions are priceless. If we all up our security and privacy game with just some of the info Carey mentions, the bad guys are going to have trouble keeping up. I cue this podcast up every week. Wouldn’t miss it.

  • My favorite

My favorite cyber security, privacy podcast. Mr. Parker is very knowledgeable, clean, and leaves politics out of the discussion. He explains things in easy to understand ways. His book is wonderful too. Thanks Mr. Parker, you’re the best.

  • Hmmm… not sure

I’m in two minds about this podcast. The host basically reads current IT/cybersecurity articles out. It’s sort of interesting as the topics can be quite relevant, but just reading articles for an hour? Don’t want to put you off listening but it can be a little dry.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

DEF CON 34
Q: How do you see AI impacting defenders and attackers in the next few years?
AI will multiply capabilities and speed, but it will also raise the bar for defense, with auto-patching and smarter threat intelligence becoming essential defenses while attackers leverage AI to automate exploits; the balance will hinge on safer tooling and memory-safe languages.
DEF CON 34
Q: What was the most exciting or surprising thing about DEF CON 34 for you?
The atmosphere surprised me with its calm and positive energy despite global tensions, and the AI-focused resourcing of contests showed a shift toward tougher, AI-resistant challenges as a trend in the hacking community.
Top Cyber Threats 2026
Q: What practical steps can regular users take to protect themselves without sacrificing all online convenience?
Use ad blockers and network-level protections to curb tracking, enable lockdown mode on devices when traveling or high-risk contexts, and prefer end-to-end encryption and zero-knowledge approaches when possible. Also prioritize trustworthy sources and consider supporting independent journalism that can illuminate these issues without chasing sensationalism.
Top Cyber Threats 2026
Q: All right. Your article seems to be a yearly high-level view; what are the most persistent threats you see right now, and why should listeners care beyond the headlines?
The threats are persistent because they exploit fundamental aspects of how we use tech daily—age verification, surveillance, data brokers, and targeted advertising—each affecting privacy, security, and even public policy. Listeners should care because these systems shape what data gets collected, who can access it, and how it can be misused, often with little transparency.
Defending Device Data
Q: What privacy rights did Carpenter v. United States establish, and has that ruling evolved to cover new data technologies like cars and cloud data?
Carpenter held that long-term location data stored by third parties is highly revealing and protected by the Fourth Amendment, requiring a warrant to obtain such data. Since then, courts have grappled with applying Carpenter to new technologies, including vehicle data and cloud-stored information, with mixed rulings and ongoing debates about how to extend or adapt Carpenter's logic to different data types and contexts.
