This is a really great listen. This is so much more than true crime; it is a story of grinding poverty, in a grim northern town, of some almost accidental criminals, deliberately parasitic hangers-on, of ‘luck’ in finding a digital ‘glitch’ for so-called ‘victimless’ crime.
This story unbelievably unfolds, with dialogue between Lewis and the key protagonists and the literal supporting characters who provided kindness without expectation.
It’s also about greed, opportunism, diligent police inve... more
When I first heard Lewis had made a podcast about a down-and-out, washed-up old guy, I naturally assumed it would be about Jon Sopel — but how wrong I was! Coining It is a compelling and thought-provoking listen that tells a gripping story while highlighting levels of deprivation that simply shouldn’t exist in the world’s sixth-largest economy.
I like Lewis presenting but I don’t think this story needed a whole podcast, I don’t feel invested in any of the people , James seems like a sad and troubled man and the rest of the people involved were clearly out for what they could get. I’m fine not knowing what happened to these people so have stopped listening.
Great story, sensitively and intelligently told. At first it feels like a Robin Hood / True Crime piece, but it’s really more than that. A exploration of broken Britain, morality and even a bit of Only Fools and Horses.
Came across this by accident and was hooked. Quite riveting,
