Anthropology, Fieldwork & Global Challenges – A Conversation with Prof. Geert De Neve
Q: What advice would you give students about ethical fieldwork?
Be patient, build relationships, let communities guide the research agenda, and constantly reflect on positionality and privilege to mitigate negative impacts of research engagement.
Anthropology, Fieldwork & Global Challenges – A Conversation with Prof. Geert De Neve
Q: What sparked your shift from economics to anthropology?
Geert explains how early exposure to anthropology during his economics degree, plus an opportunity to study abroad in the UK, revealed to him the holistic, interconnected view that anthropology offers and drew him toward field-based research.
Faith, Feeling, and the Future: Exploring Spiritual Worlds with Dr Gareth Breen
Q: Gareth, what questions or projects are you most excited about pursuing next, especially regarding the academies and the essence of China?
I'm developing projects on the Chinese academies and collaborating with Sussex and SOAS on a grant about Chinese student mental health, aiming to understand immigrant and international student experiences, access to services, and grassroots mental health practices including the use of AI.
Faith, Feeling, and the Future: Exploring Spiritual Worlds with Dr Gareth Breen
Q: I think we are really curious if you could tell us about, you know, what first drew you into studying transnational religious networks in China and Taiwan, if you'd like to share this with our audience.
The impetus was personal; I was born into a global Chinese Christian movement through my parents and only later, while studying anthropology, did I recognize how unique and historically significant the movement was, which shaped my PhD focus and informed my later work on its global dynamics.
