  • Why so rude to Annie Jacobsen?

I really enjoyed Hasan Minhaj’s interview with Annie Jacobsen, so I searched for more recent interviews she’s done. Saw this one, thought to myself, “eh, he always kind of came off like a jerk on ‘Adam Ruins Everything.’” But then I thought some of that might have been a put-on for the show. Put the interview on in the car and nope, dude is just a jerk. Acting like he already knew everything she was saying, basically acting like her book was pointless. You could tell she taken aback by his attit... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

The Warehouse Workers Who Beat Amazon with Derrick Palmer
Q: What makes the Handbook for the Revolution different, and what are the key lessons it captures for other workplaces?
The book distills the practical, repeatable method we used—the inside-outside approach, relentless visibility, and a focus on tangible worker protections—into a playbook others can adapt. It emphasizes choosing the right priorities (contract rather than power struggles), building evidence through your own inside organizing, and maintaining consistency despite setbacks, so that other workers can replicate the pathway to a durable union contract.
The Warehouse Workers Who Beat Amazon with Derrick Palmer
Q: What is the inner/outer strategy you describe, and why is it central to your method?
The inner/outer strategy centers on organizing from within the break rooms and departments while maintaining outside pressure and visibility. We focused on the workers, their daily experiences, and what a union could meaningfully change for them—vacation time, sick leave, job security—before escalating to public actions. This balanced approach helped legitimize the movement in the eyes of the workers and kept momentum alive even when outside support was limited.
The Warehouse Workers Who Beat Amazon with Derrick Palmer
Q: How did you start engaging workers at JFK8 without a pre-existing union backbone, and what was your initial approach?
We started by making our presence known outside the building, passing out ALU shirts and literature, then slowly building trust with coworkers by asking about their day, the departments they were in, and their personal experiences. It was a year-long process of listening and letting workers see that we were there to help, not to dictate, which laid the groundwork for broad participation.
Nintendo's Empire of Secrets with Keza MacDonald
Q: Tell me how it started.
Keza explains Nintendo's origins as a playing-card company in 1889 in Kyoto, founded by Fusajiro Yamauchi, evolving through family leadership and a shift into toys and eventually video games, while maintaining a culture that prizes play and longevity.
How 30,000 People Formed an Impossible Union, with Ethan Bakuli and Rodney Tate
Q: What made this campaign different from other union drives?
The scale across Michigan, the dispersed geography, and the need to treat caregiving as professional labor with real benefits required leveling the playing field through legislative advocacy, public visibility, and persistent community organizing across many towns and cities.
