  • Fascinating podcast about space

I’m listening from the start of the show and haven’t caught up yet but getting there. It’s always fascinating and I enjoy listening.

  • Good science, needs cleaner language

Re-reviewing after listening to more episodes. The scientific information is very solid, but I am not a fan of the occasional profanity. The show is rated as clean, so I expect classier language. I can’t keep listening if they’re going to continue to be unpleasant.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Exocast-78 b: Finding the most distant exoplanets with Dr Eamonn Kerins
Q: What are some unique aspects of microlensing events compared to other detection methods?
Microlensing signals are completely agnostic to the wavelength, with a very characteristic shape that differs from variable stars, providing a reliable way to confirm planetary signals.
Exocast-78 b: Finding the most distant exoplanets with Dr Eamonn Kerins
Q: Is there still thought that there's this huge population of free-floating planets?
Yes, there are claims suggesting a large population of free-floating planets in our galaxy, potentially abundant but with ongoing debates regarding their formation.
Exocast-78 b: Finding the most distant exoplanets with Dr Eamonn Kerins
Q: Do you want to briefly tell us what microlensing is and how the technique allows us to find planets?
Microlensing involves looking for an extremely rare effect where a foreground planetary system passes in line with a background star, causing a unique brightness increase that can help detect planets.
Exocast-77b: Exoplanet Instrumentation with Dr Ben Pope
Q: Could you tell us which planet you have chosen and why?
I have chosen EPIC 212-521-166-B, known as K2-110-B, which holds significance as the first planet I discovered.
Exocast-77b: Exoplanet Instrumentation with Dr Ben Pope
Q: What are some fun ideas you're exploring in terms of adaptive optics?
I'm currently investigating using high-precision aperture masks on the James Webb to optimize measurements and detect very faint planets.
