  • Another Everything Saxophone podcast to save in the archives

The recent interview with Jimmy Farace (#249) was so insightful. I’ve been listening for a while now but this is the first episode where I felt I needed to voice my appreciation for the show. I will definitely add this episode to my saved collection. I just got my first Baritone sax (yes a Bb) and I love playing ballads so this Jimmy Farace sounds like someone to check out. Plus he mentioned other artists that play melodically!

Thanks Donna, Mark and the Saxquest crew. I learned so much in this episode that I know I’m going to have to go back and listen several more times in preparation for part 2 (please). My favorite EP interview was Walt Weiskopf. His balancing of professionalism and pragmatism, artistry and method, seriousness and self deprecation, is a like a musical therapy session. Thanks again!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Saxophonist & Educator Dale Underwood on Sound, Discipline & Building a Lasting Career, Ep. 269
Q: What were the key teachers and moments that shaped your musical development?
A mix of early private lessons, then studying with Donald Sinta, who motivated a serious pursuit of high-level playing and performance, and later opportunities to commission and premiere new works that expanded my repertoire.
Saxophonist Christoph Irniger: Finding Your Voice in Modern Jazz, Ep. 268
Q: What sparked your interest in groove and rhythm as a core element of your playing?
Groove was always central; I was drawn to music with strong rhythm sections and deep groove, like the Oscar Peterson Trio, which showed me that time and space can define a performance just as much as melody.
Saxophonist Christoph Irniger: Finding Your Voice in Modern Jazz, Ep. 268
Q: How did your early musical foundations shape your approach to jazz later on?
I started with classical training and only gradually moved toward jazz, discovering influences through teachers and later funk and groove-focused players, which anchored my sense of time and groove.
Saxophonist Shawn Maxwell; How Being Different Propelled His Career, Ep. 267
Q: When did you get started in music, not just saxophone, and how did that shape your career?
I'm from Joliet and started in the Joliet band program in fourth grade as a clarinetist; the encounter with jazz at junior college opened the door to saxophone, then I shifted toward jazz and composition, which ultimately defined my career.
Saxophonist Steve Wilson; His Melodic Approach to Improvisation, Ep. 266
Q: Aside from Tony (the repairman who shifted your embouchure), who was the mentor that influenced you the most in your early stages, and why?
Steve highlights two mentors: his high school band director Dan Barlowski and James Hulick, plus Doug Richards for Ellington study; these figures helped shape his sound, approach to repertoire, and understanding of tone, voicing, and language.
