  • Wasted 45 mins

Wasted 45 minutes waiting for the guest to offer some useful advice. He seemed unwilling as he had a course to sell. I would suggest stricter vetting to ensure guests have useful insights to offer or maybe not publishing podcasts if they are devoid of information.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

EA662: Jamileh Cannon - How This Architect is Revolutionizing California Housing
Q: What insights can small firms apply today to build a better business?
Understand state laws that supersede local zoning to unlock more housing potential, rather than being constrained by local zoning assumptions, especially in California.
EA662: Jamileh Cannon - How This Architect is Revolutionizing California Housing
Q: How is Workbench different from other developers being an architect-led developer?
The firm is notably nimble due to in-house teams, enabling rapid site diagrams and pre-approved workflows, though this can create leadership-driven decision fatigue across projects.
EA662: Jamileh Cannon - How This Architect is Revolutionizing California Housing
Q: What are your plans for Workbench in the future?
Jamileh envisions completing and funding the entitled projects within 3-5 years, aiming to sign one or two big projects per year to sustain a strong pipeline and make a lasting housing impact in Santa Cruz and beyond.
EA660: Paul Sippil - How Small Architects Can Save Thousands on Retirement Fees
Q: What is your advice for a listener who is considering putting a retirement plan in place for their team to avoid exorbitant fees?
Look at low-cost, open-architecture providers (e.g., Ascensus, Employee Fiduciary) and consider Vestwell as an option; insist on fixed-dollar fees rather than percentage-based commissions, ensure payroll integration, and push for detailed, dollar-denominated invoicing to see every service charge.
EA658: Kyle Barker - Communal Housing Design Guidelines
Q: What is the book about and why did you write it?
The book arose from the Rotch Traveling Scholarship experience, expanding into around-the-world research on communal housing, with the aim to distill a massive amount of field data into practical lessons and keep it accessible as a reference, organized into 40 lessons across seven sections.
