  • Required binging for anyone interested in state and local econ dev

This is a podcast I am intentional about keeping up on, and it’s worth every minute. There’s really no better place to hear from colleagues in the field how they are innovating in the profession, and that’s all this profession is so we have to keep up with each other!

  • Staple source

Good, comprehensive view of the field of economic development provided over time. Would be interested to hear more about the beneficiaries of the services rather than the providers, the impacts of long term successes, etc.

  • A great view into Economic Development

This podcast has changed the way I look at economic development, as I get to hear from Econ Devs all across the country. I honestly had no idea what my mother did in her career but now I have a better idea on what it is that my parents try to persuade me to become. It should be noted that I listen to this podcast at 2x speed. So ymmv. Four stars.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

225: Detroit Beyond the Comeback with Kevin Johnson
Q: What should economic developers be thinking about beyond headline jobs and investment numbers when a major development is announced?
Developers should focus on community sensitivity and the broader impacts on utilities, water and sewer, roads, and infrastructure, as well as whether a true community benefit can be negotiated through partnerships with residents and local authorities.
222: How Energy Is Changing Site Selection with Anna Cardona
Q: What advice would you give to someone breaking into economic development from another field?
Build a strong network through conferences, collect contacts, and focus on relationships rather than deals; personalize outreach (e.g., personal texts) and study classic networking philosophy to build lasting connections.
222: How Energy Is Changing Site Selection with Anna Cardona
Q: How does the energy-infrastructure investment fund work and what makes it different from traditional financing?
The fund is a large private-asset structure with billions of capital, offering energy-as-a-service contracts, long tenors, off-balance-sheet treatment, and flexible buyouts, allowing projects to proceed with a lighter debt burden and faster deployment.
222: How Energy Is Changing Site Selection with Anna Cardona
Q: Can you give us the couple-minute version of your story and how you found your way into economic development?
Cardona describes starting in architecture and design, moving into project management, then being recruited into economic development by the Greater Memphis Chamber, which sparked her passion for wider community impact through strategic initiatives and policy changes.
221: Music as Economic Development with Matt Mandrella
Q: Absolutely. I have to ask, first off, what is a music officer? What do you actually do?
A music officer leads the city's initiative to use music as a driver of economic development, focusing on building a local music ecosystem, attracting talent, developing venues, coordinating with private and public partners, and creating programs (like the Music Ambassador Program) to support artists and the industry. The role also involves aligning city resources, working with Parks and Rec, and positioning Huntsville as a regional hub for music and related employment.
