  • Required binging for anyone interested in state and local econ dev

This is a podcast I am intentional about keeping up on, and it’s worth every minute. There’s really no better place to hear from colleagues in the field how they are innovating in the profession, and that’s all this profession is so we have to keep up with each other!

  • Staple source

Good, comprehensive view of the field of economic development provided over time. Would be interested to hear more about the beneficiaries of the services rather than the providers, the impacts of long term successes, etc.

  • A great view into Economic Development

This podcast has changed the way I look at economic development, as I get to hear from Econ Devs all across the country. I honestly had no idea what my mother did in her career but now I have a better idea on what it is that my parents try to persuade me to become. It should be noted that I listen to this podcast at 2x speed. So ymmv. Four stars.

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

221: Music as Economic Development with Matt Mandrella
Q: Absolutely. I have to ask, first off, what is a music officer? What do you actually do?
A music officer leads the city's initiative to use music as a driver of economic development, focusing on building a local music ecosystem, attracting talent, developing venues, coordinating with private and public partners, and creating programs (like the Music Ambassador Program) to support artists and the industry. The role also involves aligning city resources, working with Parks and Rec, and positioning Huntsville as a regional hub for music and related employment.
219: The Economic Development Handbook We All Needed with Glenn Athey
Q: What do you hope readers take away after reading your book?
Readers should understand how the different aspects of economic development connect, see practical examples from across countries, and gain the ability to apply these insights locally to pursue sustainable, inclusive growth.
219: The Economic Development Handbook We All Needed with Glenn Athey
Q: What separates a good strategy from a shelf-worthy one?
A good strategy is deeply relevant to the locality, clearly actionable, and includes an ongoing action plan with short-, medium-, and long-term steps, plus measurable indicators to track progress.
Why Economic Development Fundraising Matters More Than Ever with Brian Abernathy and Clint Nessmith
Q: What are the first steps for an organization considering a fundraising campaign?
Reach out to the experts to initiate a feasibility study, which typically lasts about two months and includes confidential interviews to assess alignment, needs-based budgeting, and the realistic potential for a campaign before moving into solicitation.
212: How Incentives Really Influence Site Selection with Taylor Stepp
Q: How important is it for a community to have information about their sites, infrastructure, and incentives online?
Put it all online because site selectors frequently perform desktop reviews; a comprehensive online front door with detailed site information, timelines, and incentives is essential.
