  • So many details

Every episode is so full of details, in every conversation are little things that stand out and give food for thought. And every time I listen to even the nerdiest (in a good way) episodes there’s is always some music I want to explore and listen to afterwards :)

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

UK Drummer/Producer Malcolm Catto (Little Barrie, Heliocentrics, DJ Shadow, etc.)
Q: What was your first snare drum and or drum kit, and do you still have it?
My first ever drum kit was a Max Wing Pearl kit that my dad bought for me, but I later traded it for an old jazz drum kit that I loved and still remember fondly.
UK Drummer/Producer Malcolm Catto (Little Barrie, Heliocentrics, DJ Shadow, etc.)
Q: Did you just have a natural strong pulse? I mean, do you ever have to play to a click?
I've had to play to a click, but I believe that the click can take away the soul of a drummer's performance, and it's important to let the music breathe.
UK Drummer/Producer Malcolm Catto (Little Barrie, Heliocentrics, DJ Shadow, etc.)
Q: How do you know when that is cool versus when it's a bad take?
You have a sense when a band is done with a track and want to move on, and you can often capture the best take after a few runs without overproducing.
More With Kenny Washington, Melodic Flam Taps, Ash Snare Drums, and More
Q: As a drummer playing with Benny Carter, was there anything you had to do differently behind him? Or was there anything that he asked for, you know, from you?
Benny was very open to different things, but I was always mindful of his style and knew to play in a way that complemented his music without overpowering it.
More With Kenny Washington, Melodic Flam Taps, Ash Snare Drums, and More
Q: Could you talk a little bit about working with Milt Jackson and what you got from working with him because he was a very unique player?
Working with Milt Jackson was a joy; time flew during our gigs, and I learned a lot about phrasing and feel from him.
