  • Incredible

Absolutely the best card podcast bar none. I only wish the episodes were longer. As Beckett monthly subscriber for many years it’s a privilege to listen to Dr Beckett talking to guests and giving sound honest advice.

Election podcast was pathetic. “Doctor” lists 12 political issues that could impact the hobby and provides standard party line talking points rather than actual facts. Do some actual research before providing bias opinions. 15 minutes of nothing I will not get back.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

1549 - Father/Son: Jeremy Lee and his father Harvey, Part 2
Q: What would you say would be the biggest mistake beginners could make?
The biggest mistakes come from not doing homework, not listening to good advice, and trying to chase quick gains; the safer path is to learn gradually, understand value, and avoid impulsive buys.
1552 - Father/Son: Graig Miller, Mid-Life, and father Michael, Part 2
Q: Michael, what do you do right with Greg? What's the advice for other dads out there that want to see their sons blossom and flourish?
The guest explains that being present and consistently supportive, both in activity and in coaching or observation, builds confidence and opportunity for their children to grow in any field, including collecting. He emphasizes showing up, being involved, and fostering a team effort.
1530 - Mailbag 3.0
Q: Is Connor Griffin's nine-year extension a smart deal at age 19 or 20?
Yes, it seems smart as a long-term asset that could be renegotiated if performance stays strong, though it includes risk if value drops, which is why he might have leverage to renegotiate later.
1515 - Offensive Manipulation Defenses
Q: I've heard you mention defensive shill bidding, but I really haven't heard much about offensive shill bidding. Is there such a thing or what's going on there?
Offensive shill bidding is described as a more insidious form of market manipulation where someone boosts the price of cards they own or control, often through coordinated or proxy bidding, to raise perceived value and influence the market. It involves tactics like a trading range being manipulated, using private or brokered sales, and leveraging auction dynamics to push prices higher, sometimes via pre-arranged deals or inside knowledge. The host emphasizes that this practice is illegal if done as self-bidding and highlights the ethical and legal boundaries within online auctions.
1492 - Julien Chiron, Collecting in France
Q: Is this going to be updating or is it different now? Because the prices have gone up. I understand that. But what else has happened in the last five years such that you want to write another book?
The first book didn't cover the complete story about Upper Deck's impact and the dynamics of Panini. I found new information and stories, especially regarding the developments in the hobby in the last five years that inspired the second book.
